new to Moka5 assistance needed
Okay I downloaded and installed Moka5 and select 4 livepcs from the library.
All of them say not buffered, so how do I buffer them and does buffering mean it copies its self to my usb drive?
Even though none are buffered I started ubuntu 7.04 and its been loading for like 30 minutes and isnt even close to being functional, what is wrong here? This is useless if the livepcs cant load in a few minutes... please explain.
Is there a way to make these things run faster? Does buffering make the livepcs run faster?
Finally during the install I told moka5 to use 4gb of space on my usb drive can I increase this to like 6gb or 8gb, Im running a 16gb usb thumb drive that only has about 6gb of files stored on it.
Im in need of some assistance, thanks in advance.
Thanks, I tried to click on
Thanks, I tried to click on the bar to buffer and it will only give me the %? I actually had to clcik on run and leave it for hours then the bar turned green to 100%, I havent tried to run but i will later today. My 16gb usb drive is from EDGE-DiskGo.
Could I kindly ask you to address my other questions above plus the ones below?
I have some additional questions.
While runnig one of these LivePcs will changes made to the desktop be saved such as wallpaper, can I install software packages to it like adding a dvd player, etc. Also if I create documnets will they be saved to the LivePc and finally can the documents be shared with my host windows machine?
Is it safe to run more than one LivePc at a time?
thanks so much
The speed at which the
The speed at which the LivePC will become buffered and ready will depend on the download speed of the internet connect, traffic on the hosting http server and the write speed on the USB device. If the USB is slow on writes, this can be a bottle neck. When subscribing to multiple new LivePCs, this will take a while to complete since only one LivePC will be downloaded at a time. Selecting the buffering bar will make that the active LivePC to be downloaded.
Increasing the cache size is possible...use the "cache-control.exe resize" option.
additional info on cache-control
Starting multiple LivePCs is very possible....need lots of RAM. For the Ubuntu 7.0.4 LivePC, the desktop is configured to be persist on on each start. This LivePC also has network mounted files will will allow you to save files outside of the LivePC. The folder icon to the right of the LivePC is available and there is a folder on the desktop in Ubuntu LivePC.
Installing software programs are also possible...Enable the "Let me make changes to this LivePC" which is available via the Edit properties option (pencil icon to right of the of each LivePC).
buffering and more
Buffered means at least a certain amount of the LivePC (enough to boot it) has been downloaded to your USB drive. When the green bar is full, you have 100%. I'm in SF and my downloads are pretty fast, what general region are you located in? What type of connection do you have?
The LivePCs run faster from better USB drives, and some USB drives are just terribly slow. If you want to asses your USB drive speed, you could try out the desktop install with a LivePC. If it runs much faster, then your USB drive may be to blame.
Your documents are accessible on your host. Click the small folder icon at the bottom right side of the LivePC listing in the LivePC Engine.
If you want to add software you have to enable a special mode called "Let me make changes". There are three steps.
1) Shutdown your LivePC first. Click the small pencil icon that appears just under the folder icon. Click show advanced. Then enable the checkbox that says "Let me make changes." If it is grayed out that means you didn't shut down the LivePC (or you suspended it, there is a back arrow that will unsuspend it). Now start the LivePC and install the software you want.
2) After you finish installing, shutdown the LivePC again. Go back to the advanced option page by clicking the pencil and then the show advanced option text. Click "package and upload to moka5" in the dialog. Fill in your moka5 account informatiom, and make sure you selected "Shallow Copy" and "Create New LivePC" (as opposed to "Update existing LivePC"). Upload it.
3) Turn off "Let me make changes" so that you continue to be protected by rejuvenation.
Next time you want to update it, you don't have to "Create a New LivePC", you should just "Update existing LivePC" that you made above.
It is safe to run more than one LivePC at once, but make sure you have plenty of RAM :-).
cool and thanks guys, I
cool and thanks guys, I think its my internet connection that is the bottle neck, I live in the mountains and only have a 1.5mb connection. Also part of the problem was I had like 5 LivePc selected so it took several hours for this to complete.
Another question do I have to install anything extra, I want to know how I can create my own LivePc's and the steps involved in doing so. I have iso images on my hard drive which just to name a few gentoo 2007, fedora6, windows xp sp2 and knoppix 5.1 I would like to make these into LivePc to share with other Moka5 users.
thanks
Hi Brad,
Hi Brad,
Thanks for trying out the LivePC Engine. When you select a LivePC from the library, you are subscribed to it, so whenever the LivePC Engine is running it will automatically be downloading the latest version of that LivePC. Depending on your Internet connection speed and the size of the LivePC, it can take a few hours for a LivePC to get "charged up" enough to be usable. The good news is that once you have done that, the updates are all small so you won't have to wait again. Just leave it on overnight and it should fetch them for you.
You can see the buffering status with the thin bar to the left of the LivePC logo. You can click on the bar to trigger buffering that LivePC.
Also, what kind of USB drive do you have? Not all USB drives are created equal - some of them have poor performance. I haven't tested the 16GB drives yet but the ones I saw a while ago didn't have very good performance specs. But even with the worst drives, you shouldn't see bootup times more than a few minutes. It sounds like your issue is that you just need to let the LivePCs buffer a bit more.
