Unable to start LivePC - Admint rights required to install VMWare Player

Hi,

I run my machine in XP LUA (Least Privilege User Account) and I am trying to install the LivePC onto my portable Harddrive which has NTFS on it. Actually I have to edit the ACL on the root directory of the portable drive to allow your installer to write to the root. Things like autorun.inf (my machine has disabled autorun) and m5launch.exe.

At the end of the installation I received a dialog box say it is unable to start Live PC. Administrator privilege is required to install VMWare Player onto this machine.

I don't get it. I thought LivePC lives on my portable device in such a way like Portable FileZila or Torpark. I do not need to install anything onto the desktop or the host hosting the portable device.

At the moment I am pondering to use my admin console to do the full installation.

If we need admin access, then you can never get this running in Internet cafe or any corporate network.

Can I have some explanation of what is happening in the back ground. Thanks.

Hello, Thanks for trying out

Hello,

Thanks for trying out the LivePC Engine. The Windows version of the LivePC Engine currently requires administrator access to run. We are working on loosening that requirement. In an upcoming release of the LivePC Engine, you will be able to run the Windows version without administrator access; you will still need to use administrator access once to install the LivePC Engine, but all later runs can run as non-administrator. Completely eliminating the admin requirement even for installation is much more difficult; a VMware kernel component provides a level of isolation and performance that is simply not possible otherwise.

For the cases where it is not possible to ever use administrator access to install the LivePC Engine, you can use the Bare Metal edition of the LivePC Engine and boot directly from the USB drive. The Bare Metal edition is a very lightweight, hardened version of Linux that is designed to just run the LivePC Engine. LivePCs are compatible between the Bare Metal edition and the Windows edition.

If you would describe how you would like to use the LivePC Engine and what features you would find compelling, that would be really helpful to us in prioritizing and developing new features.

Thanks again for using the LivePC Engine!
