What do you do if you only have PC "restoration" CD's?

What I would like to do is:

1. Use my 80gb portable HD
2. Create my own LivePC's with "images" for certain types of software (i.e. graphics, MS-Office, ...)

Then, when one of my computers crashes, I can use the other one without having to re-install all the software. Also, I like the idea of being able load programs into a LivePC, seeing how they work, then dumping them (along with their buggy, invasive habits) with a certain amount of ease!

It is my understanding, however, that to get that kind of "protection" I would need to use the "bare metal" version, and, that requires having an OS (XP-Home)CD to transfer the operating system. I only have the "restore" disks that come with the computer. Can I use them? Do I need to buy OS disks?

Sorry to be such an amateur,

M. Masterson

The Baremetal version allows

The Baremetal version allows you to make changes and lock down the changes so when bad software is installed, you can dump those changes.

For the restore CD's it may work and will be dependent on each OEM's version. We've had success with the Reinstallation CD Windows XP version. We'd love to know if your restore CD works when you get a chance.
