Hey RC - one of our goals when we set up this site was to get it up quickly with a single username/password. I've always felt that it was a horrible experience to have multiple usernames on a single site - one for the forum, another for the wiki, etc. We looked other software like phpBB, vBulletin, and Jive. We decided to go with drupal forums because it was the easiest way to get a reasonable forum integrated to the site with a single username.
I do agree that drupal forums is lacking in functionality compared to the others. I am looking at the possibility of getting something like phpBB integrated with our usernames, but can't promise anything right now.
