What is CDSK. What is VMDK

Can someone please explain the difference. When a LivePC is initially made all the disks have to be CDSKS. Later on they change to VMDKs. But these VMDKs are not VMWare compatible (at least, they don't open in the VMWare mounting utility). Why are these VMDKs not compatible? Why can't I open up my LivePC VMX in VMWare workstation?
Appreciate answers to any of these questions
