Slow slow slow

Hi,

Downloaded and installed Moka5 on my USB 2.0 External drive and now I try get it started, but my God, why is it so damn slow? This is NOT workable!

I have a 8mb ADSL connection and I can't believe how slow stuff is coming down the pipe.

Why can't I just download any LivePC engine myself and then just put it in my disc instead of the program downloading it for me?

This is INSANE! I have been waiting now for over 2 hours to be able to start up DS Linux which is only 50mb or so!

Normally it takes less than 3 minutes to download 50mb for me!

Please do something about this! Make the images available for OFFLINE install or something!

So far I haven't been even able to test your software!

Speed of USB 2.0 External Drive?

Thanks for your feedback! We would love your help to get to the bottom of this and look into offering alternatives if necessary. As a start, could you tell us what kind of drive you are using? One possibility is that your external drive is slow, as we discovered that the speed of these drives vary greatly.

Thanks,
Monica

Speed issues

Hi Monica,

fl0xmuldr is right, DSLinux is taking very long to download, gentoo is faster, could it have something to do with your servers (i don't know if gentoo is on another one) I live in the Netherlands have a 100mbit connection ( :-D ) and use LivePc on my PC, still terrible slow. I've had this problem in the past with US servers.

I'm preparing a copy of your DSLinux on a local server to try connection.

[edit]
It's in the betagarage and i've tried it. It's much faster but hangs after every 10-20% or so... weird, maybe application can't handle high speed connections? doesn't update % by % but blocks at a time.

Both DSLinux and Gentoo are

Both DSLinux and Gentoo are hosted on the same server.
Can you guy try Fearless Browser and see if that boots up faster.

Please help us diagnose network problem

Hi fl0xmuldr,

Would you mind trying to download the following and let us know how long it takes? It'd be helpful for us to know in order to diagnose the problem a bit more.

http://repo.moka5.com/dsl/11Sept2006/system.cdsk

This is essentially one of the larger files that the LivePC Engine downloads. Your download speed will help us find out whether it is a network problem.

Also, could you please tell us your ip address? You can find out your ip address at www.whatisyourip.com. If you prefer to tell us privately please email [email protected]

Thank you for trying the LivePC Engine!

Hi Alexander,

Thanks for helping publish a faster version of the LivePC!! at this link: EU-NL High Speed Damn Small Linux. This is great! I assume you downloaded the above file as well as some other files to make this happen?

Or did you just build Damn Small Linux from scratch?

If you just built it from scratch, would you mind downloading the above file and let us know how long it took. It will help us diagnose a bit further...

Thank you for trying the LivePC Engine!

Many thanks,
-Gerald

With beta-6, the performance

With beta-6, the performance has been improved. Please try again and see if you still have any problem.

Slow, slow, slow download and load

I too have this problem, 1 Dec 07.

I have an 8Mbps ADSL connection and a 2G Crucial Gizmo Overdrive (5 stars in your review article!). MS DOS 7 (5M) has been downloading for well over an hour and I expect Damn Small Linux will take forever. I had to give up trying to load Ubuntu yesterday because it didn't seem to get anywhere at all.

The Fearless Browser did download but I've no idea how long it took as I was busy. I deleted Fearless Browser and reformatted the USB drive because it was too slow to respond with the mouse failing to respond for several seconds at a time.

I tried to build my own from an Ubuntu CD but it just kept giving me errors about running out of space and then hanging during the install. The FAQ does not give any idea how to handle this error during install.

I was baffled as to why 50% of the USB capacity (1Gb) was given over to cache.

Moca5 sounds like a good idea but it doesn't work for me.

The installer will allocate

The installer will allocate approx 50% of space if 2 GB is not available for the cache. 50% was chosen so that the other 50% will allow starting the LivePC and possibly also allow enough space to suspend the LivePC. The footprint of the suspended LivePC will vary on the Memory size assigned to the LivePC.

With this in mind, Fearless will take approx 162 MB, MS-DOS close to nil and Ubuntu 7.0.4 to use 765 MB. The size of Ubuntu will exceed the capacity ~500 MB allocated to the cache in the 1 GB USB situation. The LivePCs will still work but it will be slow due to demand paging the blocks from the network.

Creating a Locally created LivePC is not highly recommended on a USB stick due to speed and space limitations. Depending on the size if the OS installation you can try setting the cache to zero in the Setting Tab. (Locally created LivePCs do not use the cache).

Idiot's Guide needed

Thanks for your reply. It seems that the best settings for any given install are very hard to ascertain! How about an Idiot's Guide where a few examples of install file size are given along with the recommended settings for reasonable results?

Once an initial download is achieved then the user can start to experiment. Having to experiment on your first install is very unsatisfactory! ;-)
