Gentoo 2006.1 and looooong startup times

i downloaded the gentoo 2006.1 livepc and changed the settings as detailed in the info... fired up the machine... it booted, did its thing for like an hour, then finished and dumped me to a shell... so far so good.
i decided to halt it and restart it, and everything went fine. did an emerge on kde-meta, and 3 DAYS later (yes, DAYS) it was finished grabbing and compiling everything...
in the course of the emerge of kde, i suspended the machine a number of times because i needed to do something on the host, and it was eating 100% of my cpu... the machine restored from its suspended state just find every time and cheerfully went on compiling. once it finished, i halted the machine with the intention of firing it up and playing with it some today.
so, i start it up and... nothing. well, not nothing, it thrashes the drive like crazy, and i finally noticed that the little orange circle had a tiny sliver in it... i hovered and it said "starting 4%"... let it go for a while longer... but after a while i gave up... extrapolating from the time it took to get to 10%, i figure im looking at somewhere in the neighborhood of 4-4.5 hours to start.
that surely cant be right. whats going on? no WAY am i starting over and letting the silly thing go for another 3 days to emerge kde...

By the way, Beta 4 has been (re-)released. You can download it here. If you run it, it will automatically upgrade your LivePC Engine. Note that the first launch might take a while because we changed some internal data formats and it converts all of your LivePCs on the first launch.

Fixed in Beta 4
Indeed, the problem of slow startups when "Let me keep my changes" is enabled is fixed in Beta 4, which was released today, but we unfortunately had to take it down temporarily because we encountered a potential problem with the installer. We'll get to the bottom of this and have it released in the next couple of days. Your client will autoupdate when it is available.
In the meantime, in the old version the start is slow but *will* eventually finish. The percent complete number may not be accurate, and subsequent starts should be much faster.
Sorry about that bug - the product is still beta and I hope you'll bear with us as we iron out all the problems.

PS. 3 days for an "emerge kde-meta", I admire your patience...
