how can I get the german keyboard?

hi forum - I've read several threads concerning this und tried to realize the commands - without any success. I've opened /usr/share/keymap/i386 and have tried to open ge.map.gz - without success. could someone give me a DETAILED advice what to do? - thanks so much - wadi
