Vista LivePC installation from CD-ROM

This guide will step you through creating a Vista LivePC from an installation CD-ROM with the Windows Moka5 Engine.

Requirements

  • Moka5 Engine for Windows installed on a Windows XP SP2 machine
  • Windows Vista CD-ROM
  • Windows Vista Product Activation Key
  • Minimum memory setting recommended: 512 MB RAM

Create the LivePC

  1. Insert the Windows Vista CD into the CD-ROM tray.  Close the Vista Installer on the host by clicking on the 'X' in the top right corner.
  2. Start the Moka5 Engine and click on '+ Add New LivePC'.

  4. Click on the arrow button for 'Make your own LivePC' in the 'Add a new LivePC' window.

  5. Select 'OS type' Windows and Vista from the drop down menus under 'Create a new LivePC from an install CD or DVD'. Then click on the arrow beside the options.

  6. Name the LivePC, leave 'Install from' set to 'Physical CD/DVD', and click on 'Advanced Options'.

  7. Set 'Memory' to at least 512 MB in the 'Create LivePC' Window and click on 'Create'.

  8. Read ahead to be prepared to interrupt the launch then click on the 'Start' button for your new 'Vista LivePC' in the Moka5 Engine.

Install Vista on the LivePC

  1. As you new LivePC launches it will bring up the Moka5 logo. Click your mouse on the logo to cause the mouse cursor to disappear (if needed, click again until the cursor disappears). Then press 'F2'.

  2. After pressing 'F2' the 'PhoenixBIOS Setup Utility' will open.

    • NOTE: If you do not click on the logo and press F2 in time (easy to have happen) the following window will open and display "Operating System not found".

    • Click on the 'VMware Player' drop down menu, mouse down to 'Troubleshoot' and select 'Power Off and Exit'. Your new Vista LivePC will close. You can now start the LivePC again and click on the Moka5 logo to interrupt the launch.
  3. Using the arrow keys, arrow down until you highlight 'Primary Master' and press 'Enter'. A new screen will be displayed. Within the new screen arrow down to '32 Bit I/O' and press 'Enter'. This will open a little window press the arrow down key to highlight 'Enabled' and press 'Enter'. The '32 Bit I/O' will now be marked '[Enabled]'. Press the 'ESC' key to return to the main menu of the 'PhoenixBIOS Setup Utility'.

  4. Repeat step 3 twice; first enable '32 Bit I/O' for 'Primary Slave' and then for 'Secondary Master'.
    • Press the arrow down key until you highlight 'Primary Slave' and press 'Enter'
    • Press the arrow down key until you highlight 'Enabled' and press 'Enter'
    • Press the 'ESC' key to return to the main menu
    • Press the arrow down key until you highlight 'Secondary Master' and press 'Enter'
    • Press the arrow down key until you highlight 'Enabled' and press 'Enter'
    • Press the 'ESC' key to return to the main menu
  5. Press the 'F10' key to 'Save and Exit' out the 'PhoenixBIOS Setup Utility'. Use the arrow keys to highlight 'YES' in the confirmation window and click 'Enter' to save your changes.

  7. Windows Vista should start booting from the CD.

  8. When the 'Install Windows' window opens you may adjust the options or leave the defaults and click on 'Next'.

  9. In the next window click on 'Install now'.

  10. Enter your 'Product Activation Key' (this step might not appear on some versions of Windows Vista CDs). NOTE: It is recommended that 'Automatically activate Windows when I'm online' be left unchecked. It should be activated manually after the installation is complete. Click 'Next'.

  11. Review the 'Software License Terms' and check the 'I accept' box if you agree to Microsoft Vista's license terms. You will not be able to continue without accepting the terms. Click 'Next'.

  12. In the 'Which type of installation do you want?' window click on 'Custom'.

  13. 'Where do you want to install Windows?' Select the drive you have chosen for the LivePC. NOTE: You will see the message 'This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk'. Click on 'Drive options (advanced)'.

  14. Your options will change, click on 'New'.

  15. Your options will change again, leave 'Size' at its default value and click on 'Apply'.

  16. Click on 'Next'.
  17. After clicking on 'Next' you will get a warning message "Windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation". Click on 'X' to cancel the installation. (You will finish the installation later.)
  18. Windows will confirm you wish to cancel installation. Click 'Yes' to confirm.
  19. You will be returned to the 'Install Windows' start window. Click on 'X' to cancel the install.
  20. You will be asked to confirm your cancellation. Before clicking 'Yes' read ahead to be prepared for the next step. Click 'Yes'.

  22. The LivePC will restart. While the Moka5 logo is displayed (during the BIOS Scan) press 'ESC' once to open the BIOS Boot Menu.

    • NOTE: If you did not press 'ESC' at the right time (easy to have happen) the following window will open and display "Operating System not found".

    • Press 'Ctrl-Alt-Insert' to restart the LivePC. Press 'ESC' while Moka5 logo is displayed. Repeat until you succeed in opening the 'Boot Menu'.
  23. Use the down arrow to highlight 'CD-ROM Drive' and press 'Enter'. The LivePC will boot from the install CD. You will be back at the screen from step 6. At this point you will need to repeat the steps from 7 through 11:
    • Language selection: When the 'Install Windows' window opens you may leave the defaults and click on 'Next'.
    • Install now: In the next window click on 'Install now'.
    • Product key: Enter your 'Product Activation Key' (this step might not appear on some versions of Windows Vista CDs). NOTE: It is recommended that 'Automatically activate Windows when I'm online' be left unchecked. It should be activated manually after the installation is complete. Click 'Next'.
    • Software license: Review the 'Software License Terms' and check the 'I accept' box if you agree to Microsoft Vista's license terms. You will not be able to continue without accepting the terms. Click 'Next'.
    • Type of installation: In the 'Which type of installation do you want?' window click on 'Custom'.
  24. Installation location: 'Where do you want to install Windows?' Select the drive you have chosen for the LivePC. NOTE: This time you will NOT see the message 'This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk'. Click on 'Next'.

  25. The Vista installation will start. The installation will take some time to complete (20 minutes on Dell Dimension 3100).

  26. Once installation is complete Vista will ask you to choose a username, computer name, time zone, etc. Then the Vista Welcome and Preparing your Desktop will open.
