Comments for "LivePC no longer run on my laptop from USB drive"enSOLVED - REINSTALL EVERY INSTANCE - WORKS GREAT !
http://www.moka5.com/node/468#comment-511
SOLVED - AN IMPORTANT NOTE TO EVERYONE AND MOKA5 SUPPORT !
Apparently when one has multiple instances of Moka5 loaded first on a USB stick, and then on the desktop or another USB HD, there are some types of problems that if they cause the USB HD Moka5 instance to fail, it requires unistalling on the USB HD first, then a complete Unintall and reinstall on the USB stick afterwards to allow the Moka5 instance to be loaded and run successfully on the USB HD again!!!!!
This happened to me a week or so back, but in the confusion of things I had forgotten the painful lesson.
The odd part was that the failure (after a complete USB HD uninstall and reinstall) produced a lot of odd and seemingly false error messages that takes one in all types of directions trying to find the answer.
- odd instances in the log don't point out the answer easily
- false vm networked related errors (virtual network vm driver)
- false comm errors (could not reach server)
- vm player errors
Along the way, I also:
- installed and reinstalled the VM Player
- attempted to copy similar moka5 USB profiles from the USB stick to the USB HD - often finding some missing on the USB HD after reinstall AND to a certain extent this did bring up some more functionality in the USB HD Moka5 instance (it got farther to the Moka5 menu rather than failing in the initialization)
Finally, after exhausting all seemingly possible answers, one gets disgusted enough to remove Moka5 everywhere, and then just for the heck of it, see if a reinstall on the USB stick works... then attempting to see if Moka5 reloads and runs properly on the USB HD - SUCCESS !
Ok,,, so what is the underlying cause of these issues ? - and it also seems appropriate to file this for everyones sake.
MOKA5 rules when it works
===========
SIDE NOTE:
Note 1: It would be very nice if when uninstalling Moka5 instances, to not have the Moka5 data files moved to the desktop if only the Moka5 application framework is being uninstalled. That is a real drawback if the Moka5 instances on the USB HD is large, and it also takes up a lot of space with files (are they deleted when another USB Moka5 instance is recreated ?)
Note 2: Stop making custom Moka5 folder names with code crap in the names. As a secondary note, Virtual PC by MS (only good for windows OS instances - but covers the original win 9x series well)... a real benefit in reinstalls
Someone in tech support should take a serious look at this issue - what would have happened if I had give away the USB stick with my original instance of Moka5 - this did not appear to make much sense except for possibly when I put in the USB stick for testing after removing all Moka5 and vm instances from the desktop and usb hd, there may have been some odd info deposited supposedly temporarily on the hosting PC that had an real issue attempting to reinstall afterwards on the USB HD or desktop.

It sounds like you have 2 different USB sticks any it does seems odd that one would work while the other will not.
A. Previous installation onto Stick A with Fearless has not issues
B. New installation onto Stick B reports Fearless with the "cannot reach server" message
The m5engine.log may show something. Please sent this to [email protected]
Also another item you can try is using a tool like WINDIFF and compare the contents between the USB sticks. Of course some files will not compare properly.
Completing a diff of for the Fearless LivePC will also be interesting.

I've also noticed that some sticks and host combinations may not be updating in the User Interface. Click somewhere in the User Interface to force a refresh (just in case).
The local installation of VMware Player will not make any difference in this case.

I have no problem accessing the net from either firefox or IE. On my laptop, there has been no problem in the past with either the zone alarm pro firewall (which I have set many forwarding and mapping for ftp, web servers, messaging, etc). On the laptop I also run Norton Anti-virus as well as Webroot SpySweeper.... all of which worked fine for about a week and a half prior to this problem.
I re-ghosted my laptop with a full replacement of where the unit was just prior to the successful installs in the past. I've also loaded the VM player, and also tried installing the application on the desktop vs the USB drive. It does not show any VM Player error, just a notice under fearless browser application that state that it cannot reach server.
(my email, ftp, browser, all word fine - set as a static connection to my gateway. There are no messages of any type suggesting that I cannot access the net. The only unusual other circumstance is that the latest flash update did not seem to find the net. I also only have two entries in my hosts file.
Yet the small 1 gig USB stick I loaded earlier (before these other problems started) still loads fearless browser correctly.... although I did have to load it twice (player failed the first time)... but it runs fine.
What should I do? I will reinstall it as well as the VMWare player if necessary and send you the log at
\moka5\Documents and Settings\moka5User\Application Data\moka5\env\m5engine.log ?
By the way if there was a problem in the comm... wouldn't the USB stick with Fearless Browser also have a problem ?

Is your firewall enabled by any chance? Can you access the internet on this laptop? The "cannot reach the server" is a typical symptom of an application blocking internet access. Which browser is being launched? Also are there any warning/blocked at the top of the browser?
Let us know if this helps or if you need additional assistance.

http://www.moka5.com/node/468
for the last week and a half I have had no problems with livepc. I had multiple ones plus a xpprosp2 one running also - all fine. Currently I still have a USB stick with fearless browser and it loads fine also.
Recently I had to restore my unit with Ghost, and now whenever I load the same configuration, when starting moka5 - fearless says it cannot reach the server. It lets me add a new app, but when I ask for the configuration file - it shows the localhost screen as blank (no fields to fill in like before).
Independently the USB stick with LivePC still runs fine, but no livePC will load from my USB drive. I have also installed (after and with reinstalls of moka5), the vmplayer (1.03).
