I'm posting this in the hope that it helps others diagnose their own problems. In my case I couldn't get the install to complete, with the errors shown at the beginning of this thread.
After lots of work by support (thanks guys!) we have tracked it down to the use of folder redirection in our local accounts. Essentially a folder like "My Documents" is redirected from your local drive to a network share with a UNC pathname. It happens invisibly to the user, and allows online and offline files to be quickly synchronised, much better than roaming profiles. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/232692 for more information.
Anyway, the support guys tell me that a version of LivePC Engine that works with folder redirection may be out in the future. Here's waiting.

Yes, I got the same error message again. I was installing on the local hard disk. I've sent the log files off to the support email address, except that the first folder doesn't exist (nothing called "moka5" exists under Application Data, and there is no "m5engine.log" anywhere on the machine.
The next log file seems to be complaining about the lack of the "moka5" folder...Fri, 20 Oct 2006 03:40:57 -0700Having VMware Workstation

Having VMware Workstation installed on the PC will not affect the installation. If you try to install it again, do you get the same "Cache-control error 3" message?
Were you trying to install it on a USB device or on the local hard disk?
Can you send us these logs:
%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\moka5\Engine\m5engine.log
%TEMP%\{……}\{…}\moka5log.log
%TEMP%\{……}\{…}\usb-control.log
You may need to search in %TEMP% to find the moka5log.log and usb-control.log
Please send the logs to [email protected] with ticket #2621 as the subject. Thanks.

I've just tried installing the latest Beta 5 and get exactly the same error message as originally reported.
I wonder if its related to having VMware Workstation or VMware Console on the PC already?Thu, 19 Oct 2006 04:20:00 -0700Have you tried the latest

Do you still get the same error: "cache-control returned 3. Aborting installation?"
We have opened ticket #2621 to track this issue.Wed, 11 Oct 2006 16:31:38 -0700Still Won't Install

I just downloaded the latest release that you have posted and attempted to install it and I am sorry to report to you that I get the same errors as before. The only difference is that instead of the installation taking 3 to 5 minutes prior to the installation error it only takes about a minute now.Wed, 11 Oct 2006 15:54:04 -0700We believe the latest

We believe the latest release of the software addresses the installation problem. Please download it and try it again.Wed, 11 Oct 2006 12:37:54 -0700I'm seeing a similar installation problem...

I'm seeing what I think may be the same problem. I try to install the engine, and at the end of the part of the install where you watch the progress bar, the install window disappears. Then, if I check the windows task manager, LivePC is eating 95% cpu, and the taskbar entry (it says "LivePC Engine - InstallShield Wizard") stays up. I haven't seen the runtime error yet... I guess I killed the process before it could get to that part. If someone wants to guide me through capturing some debug information, I'd be glad to do that...
thanks-

http://www.moka5.com/node/233
Attempted to install the desktop PC Live engine and removable Storage Device 1.0.6688 and both installations fail.
After starting the installation and configuring installation path , accepting EULA etc. application begins to install and the installation status bar shows the application installing. after a minute or two the installation window closes, but the installation application remains in the windows task bar. After about two or three minutes a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library error window opens and states, " Runtime Error! Program E:\Program Files\moka5\Engine\bin\cache-control.exe This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's supprot team for mor informtion."
