Simplified Client Management for a Complex World
If you’re in IT, life is tough. If you’re in client-side IT, life is crazy. Gone are the comfortable days of standard WinTel PCs all nice and safe behind the firewall. Today – client IT is the Wild West. You have corporate devices and you have personal devices to manage. You have local, remote, and mobile users to deal along with Macs in the executive suite. Meanwhile, iPhones, iPads, and Android devices of all stripes need access to critical corporate information over different network protocols securely. It’s enough to make you want to man the barricades and cry– STOP!
But as in baseball, there are no tears in IT. Beyond the staggering variety of devices you have to manage and the security required for them to be effective, the other significant issue you’re forced to contend that your server-side slacker pals avoid is mobility. All of your assets are constantly on the go, jumping from protocol to protocol, public to private networks, and by extension the latency variances and connectivity issues that affect your end-users. We all know who gets the blame, when users can’t connect and productivity suffers. Server side doesn’t have to deal with that – they can run their virtualization and server management systems on their machines which never move.
Moka5 actually brings a simple solution to the problem, but does require a slight change in the way you think about things. Currently, you’re probably thinking about solving these problems either one of two ways — extending existing endpoint management systems for use with mobile device management systems or use VDI for mobile computers, or possibly planning a combination of the two. Endpoint management has been around for quite some time – systems like Tivoli, Altiris, and HP – as well as their junior cousins Mobile Iron and Airwatch – are all fundamentally designed to manage a device. They use agents to manage device settings, security, updating patches, and software distribution. All very good and important functions - but they don’t do the things that you as a client-side IT person managing highly mobile endpoints most need done: How do they manage secure access to critical corporate assets? How do they enable rapid on – and off-boarding of new and remote employees? Can they help separate personal from business data assets? Most of all, how do they ensure a positive end-user experience and productivity in low-latency environments or no latency environments? The simple answer is they can’t.
As for using VDI for mobile computers with unknown bandwidth capabilities, results indicate the less said here the better and certainly can’t be repeated in a family publication.
In contrast, Moka5 enables you to start managing just your users and their data, instead of worrying about their devices. We call it data and user centric management.
First, Moka5 provides a highly-secure container that you can populate with your full corporate windows image. For users using their personal machines or standard corporate machines, they can self provision their Windows or Mac devices with the container and their image and data in a matter of minutes - all in the container. (And, when those users leave the organization, one click removes the container from their machine and it ceases to be an issue.) All corporate data processing is performed in the container and never touches the host. The container itself is fully encrypted and all network traffic is encrypted – even when using the public internet! Unlike VDI, a network connection is not required to access and use the image in the container. Also, unlike VDI, all processing in the container occurs locally with only the day’s changes saved back to the corporate servers. This means the user experience is identical to working on a native PC or Mac with no network latency – and virtually no server-side infrastructure! Now, no matter what your users’ network connectivity status is, they will remain productive without a loss of performance.
Because Moka5 does not physically manage the host, you can continue to run your existing client endpoint systems as they can perform the OS upgrades, software distribution, etc., for the physical machine, but Moka5 simply handles all updates that touch the corporate image. Simple, no?
“Mass updates in one click?”
So as you weigh the nearly impossible tasks awaiting you on a daily basis, think about Moka5. We do what you most need to support the reality of today’s Enterprise client computing.
- Simplicity – Containers for easy management and data security, local execution for consistent performance
- Security – Full container and bandwidth encryption, ensuring secure access for corporate data regardless of location or network type
- Productivity – Users can self–provision, self-regenerate, and work in their containers regardless of network status or bandwidth
