COPE with VDI for BYO? Redefining IT Acronyms
Acronyms. Every industry has them, but some are more ambiguous than others. When it comes to IT acronyms, sometimes the most commonly used meaning of acronyms do not tell the whole story.
Join us as we share what we believe to be the true meanings of some of our industry’s more frequently used IT acronyms:
BYOD
Be Your Own Decision maker. Who wants to be told what kind of device they have to use? Probably the same person who wants to bring a company-issued Blackberry and an iPhone everywhere they go. Answer: NO ONE.
My company has a BYOD policy for the mobile technology we use. I’m glad someone treats me like an adult…even if I do live with my mom.

COPE
“COPE” is a business model in which an employee must deal with using whatever kind of device his or her company chooses to buy in bulk. The individual must also pay for that device, but is permitted to use it for personal activities outside of work. In other words, COPE could stand for: Chosen by the Organization, Paid for by the Employee.
My company owns my smartphone, which means that not only do I have a POS Blackberry, but I also have to pay for it.

VDI
Often used when discussing virtual desktop infrastructure, this acronym for “Very Dumb Idea” is sometimes misinterpreted as describing a technology that provides a solution for BYO management.
Informed IT Manager: What technology are you using to manage your bring-your-own-device program?
Foolish IT Manager: My company has a VDI for BYO.
Informed IT Manager: A very dumb idea? That’s a shame. You should consider implementing something that doesn’t provide a terrible UX.

MDM
MDM may stand for “mobile device management,” but traditional MDM programs often have a Big Brother type approach, giving “the man” visibility into everything going on your device. The Man Does Monitor, might be a more accurate use of this acronym.
Friend: Does your organization use traditional MDM?
Employee: Yep, The Man is everywhere.
